Our “Healthy Food Philosophy”
The goal was to change eating habits of the whole family (not just me) and be the role models for our kids. We want to teach them eat properly and healthy from the very beginning.
Cooking for the Baby
Every parent wants the best for his baby. The food you introduce to your baby and eating habits might significantly affect baby’s development and health in the whole future life.
I was shocked when I saw in one kindergarten that kids have some crackers with potentially harmful MSG (Monosodium glutamate) for snack. I cannot believe this kindergarten advertised healthy diet for the kids 🙁
One thing I really love about babies, that they are like a blank paper. There is no prejudgment from their side. Your kid will never ask you for a sweets if he doesn’t know it exists. Our older daughter (20 months) is crazy about fruits and veggies. She cannot wait to get it after every meal! Isn’t it parent’s dream?
Most of our recipes is prepared with babies in mind. We share the food with our daughter from her 8 months, we just don’t use salt and spices for her serving at all.
Avoid Processed Food, Make it at Home
When I shop I look at the nutrition label of food I am buying. If I can see a ton of components and would need PhD in chemistry to understand them, I pass. Simple ingredients, all natural, is the key.
Secret is that with little planning you can prepare all those processed foods upfront. Very often it will be even cheaper.
But the most important thing is that homemade food will bring you healthy nutrients in a clear form with no hidden harmful chemicals!
Buy High Quality Ingredients
Buy quality stuff. The meal is combination of ingredients – using low quality ingredients will lower quality of your food. I am not saying that from now on, you need to buy everything organic (usually we don’t do that). For example use quality olive oil instead of cheap alternative such as margarine.
Listen to Your Body
There are common rules and guides that will apply to major part of the population, but remember – everybody is different.
For example I like breakfasts rich in proteins (they keep me full for long time), while my husband prefers carbohydrate based breakfast (immediate energy booster at the beginning of the day). Our friend likes only 4 meals per day while we like at least 5 meals.
Try to figure out what suits you the best. In the whole process of losing baby weight you should not feel hungry or extremely tired from low calorie income. Choose the meals you like not just what “is allowed” to eat (but not tasty for you).
Remember that you shouldn’t suffer, this is a long term solution and you need to keep going. That is why it is extremely important to find your own way of healthy eating which suits you the best.
